About Us



Joel Haines is the CEO of Five-Star Sports and has 11 years of working experience in the youth education industry in China. Mr. Haines is fluent in written and spoken Mandarin. Since Five-Star’s founding in 2012, Mr. Haines has led all aspects of business strategy & operations, building the company from a single-coach program to its current stage of business. Mr. Haines has provided the vision behind critical growth efforts including multi-city expansion, pursuit of strategic branding and operations partners, corporate negotiations, and hiring of key expansion-focused staff. Mr. Haines is a Graduate of Crandall University with dual Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Education. Mr. Haines completed his Mandarin studies at Shenzhen University, with HSK Level 6 certification.



Jimmy Lu is the Chief Operating Officer at Five-Star Sports and General Manager of Five-Star Sports’ Beijing branch, supervising internal and external bilingual operations and regulatory management. Mr. Lu has been with Five-Star since the company’s founding and has been integral in expanding the program to the company’s current footprint. Mr. Lu is primarily responsible for daily operations, management of Chinese staff, location leasing and service contract negotiation, and legal compliance. Mr. Lu led negotiations on a 10-year deal with Shenzhen Bay Sports Center, where more than 1,000 Five-Star students attend weekly classes, as well as a 9-year facilities management deal at the Sanshengguan sports facility in Chengdu. Mr. Lu is fluent in spoken and written English. Mr. Lu holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Information Engineering from Shenzhen University.



Joseph Qi is the Chief Growth Office at Five-Star Sports and has been with the company since 2014. Mr. Qi is responsible for developing relationships with International Schools, VIP clients, and other growth-related partners, as well as managing on-court coaches and staff to ensure the highest quality control in Five-Star's programs. Mr. Qi has coached at all levels in Five-Star's programs and has additionally served as coach for company teams, AAU youth teams in international tournaments, and the Nike Rise Academy in Guangzhou. Mr. Qi was also responsible for the creation of the CCSC American High School Basketball Academy program. Mr. Qi is fluent in spoken and written English and has acted as translator for NBA personalities including LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and NBA shooting coach Dave Hopla. Mr. Qi is a graduate of Shenzhen University with a focus in English studies.



Adam Hagge is the Head of Corporate Development at Five-Star Sports, providing operations oversight and expansion planning in China’s rapidly growing sports education market. Mr. Hagge has ten years of experience in the U.S. and China spanning engineering, financial/physical energy commodities trading, financial risk management, deal valuation, and investor relations. Prior to joining Five-Star, Mr. Hagge managed a commodities trading desk at RBS Sempra Commodities, and later cofounded and served as COO of New York-based GP Renewables & Trading, a renewable energy asset management company. Mr. Hagge leads expansion and acquisition efforts at Five-Star from deal valuation and due diligence through execution and implementation. Mr. Hagge holds dual Bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Economics from The Johns Hopkins University, and has attended graduate-level economics and quantitative finance classes at the Peking University HSBC Business School.



McCall Sidner-Foster is the Director of Branding and Program Development at Five-Star Sports. Mrs. Sidner-Foster leads the branding initiative for the programs at Five-Star Sports, holding responsibility for the evolution of specific program/ brand lines and providing recommendations on program direction and features for strategic planning. In addition to managing Five-Star's marketing department during growth from 4 to over 15 employees, she has extensive experience in youth coaching and athletic training, and headed the development for the company's Strengths & Conditioning program. Mrs. Sidner-Foster was a multi-sport athlete who competed collegiately at the D1 level in Track & Field, as well as competing post-collegiately as an independent athlete. Mrs. Sidner-Foster graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Portland State University.



Alice Yin is the Director of Finance at Five-Star Sports, with responsibilities including financial oversight and supervision of daily operations, ensuring financial regulatory compliance, and the design implementation of robust and scalable financial systems and practices. Ms. Yin provides regular financial reports to the CEO and investors as well as data analysis to seek opportunities to increase efficiency and aid the company's business development strategy. Ms. Yin previously worked for Weatherford Asia Pacific Co., Ltd., participating in the company’s internal auditing and external auditing (conducted by Deloitte and PWC) during her seven-year tenure. Ms. Yin later served as Financial Manager for the China Aerospace Corporation, with responsibilities including firm-wide financial oversight. Ms. Yin graduated from the Hubei University of Economics with a Bachelor’s degree in Financial Management and is a certified senior accountant.



Bob Pierce is Director of Instruction for Five-Star Sports and is responsible for setting a progressive curriculum which increases in difficulty and complexity as players' skills develop to ensure the highest quality of basketball education. Mr. Pierce has over 30 year of basketball coaching experience, including the Chinese U18 National Team, the Japanese National Team, Chinese and Japanese professional teams, as well as university and high school teams in the USA. Mr. Pierce is also currently the Asia Scout for the NBA's Miami Heat, and has served as Asia Scout for the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers in the past. Mr. Pierce is a true scholar of basketball history and strategy, and overseas Five-Star's senior coaching staff to ensure that they become the highest caliber of instructors in order to provide the highest quality of training to the students.



Jeff joined Five Star Sports at the start-up phase as the largest outside investor in 2012. He is a board member and active advisor to the company and is the second largest shareholder behind founder Joel Haines.

Mr. Olyniec is the cofounder and CEO of New Vision Display (NVD), a public company (SZSE: 300120.sz) engaged in the manufacturing of LCDs, touch panels, and protective glass for use in products such as automobiles, medical equipment, and consumers goods. He orchestrated the buyout of the entity from Flextronics (NYSE: FLEX) in 2012 and grew the company's revenue threefold by 2017. He then completed a backdoor listing of NVD via Jing Wei Electric (SZSE: 300120.SZ) in August 2017 resulting in a 22x return for founding shareholders.

Mr. Olyniec is an active investor having founded or been involved in the start-up of several entities during his 20+ years living in China. Industries in which he has held senior management positions or was a founder have included golf resorts, golf academies, high tech electronics components manufacturing, renewable energy manufacturing and development, sports equipment manufacturing, real estate development, and sports academies.

Mr. Olyniec holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Mississippi State University and is fluent in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese.



Frank Au is the cofounder and Managing Partner of PacificPine, a technology growth capital firm. Mr. Au has spent over 20 years covering the technology and healthcare market in China. Mr. Au has spent over 15 years as an entrepreneur having founded, built and sold an independent investment banking business.

Mr. Au is the former President of China Renaissance Securities (HK), the wholly-owned broker dealer subsidiary of China Renaissance Group, the largest internet sector focused full service investment bank in China. Prior to China Renaissance, Mr. Au was the former CEO of Cowen and Company Asia and a member of Cowen’s global management committee. Prior to Cowen, Mr. Au was the co-founder and President of Latitude Capital Group, a boutique M&A and private placement advisory firm with offices in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai which was acquired by Cowen Group (COWN:US). Prior to co-founding Latitude, Mr. Au was the former Head of Internet investment banking for Greater China at Lehman Brothers Asia. Mr. Au worked for Lehman Brothers in both their New York and Hong Kong offices and served stints in the Firm’s TMT, LBO and Industrial investment banking coverage groups.

Mr. Au advises Five-Star Sports in pivoting toward rapid expansion in the China market and will provide guidance regarding proper structuring during various stages of capital raising.

Mr. Au holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA from Columbia University.



Michael Lyu is the founder and CEO of Mentor China Education Technology Co., Ltd., aiming to promote international education in China.

Mr. Lyu has 9 years of experience in global capital market. He was an investment director of a global fund Ally Bridge Capital, focusing on growth-stage investment in the US and China technology and internet sector; prior to that he was a senior associate at Macquarie Capital, focusing on helping Chinese tech companies with IPO and cross-border M&A.

Mr. Lyu serves as a senior adviser of China-US Technology Innovation Union and an executive member of Hong Kong Monte Jade Science and Technology Association, providing strategic consulting service to cooperative projects between China – US and China – Israel, in the energy, technology and education sectors. Mr. Lyu was also the founding member of the Sino-US Technology Innovation Park in Baishishan, Hebei Province in China, where he worked with the central government to help the American and Israeli tech companies with business in China. Mr. Lyu has been an angel investor since 2013. He has invested into projects such as Five Star Sports, Verizon Telematics China etc.

Mr. Lyu represents the minority shareholders in Five-Star Sports with regard to future expansion and development, and is a key advisor concerning government relations.

Mr. Lyu holds dual Bachelor’s degrees in Economics and Mathematics from Pitzer College. Mr. Lyu was also a visiting scholar of MIT Sloan School of Management.



Raymond Roessel is the founder and Managing Director of i3 Sports, one of China’s leading boutique sports marketing agencies. Mr. Roessel has spent nearly 20 years in the Chinese sports marketing industry working with key stakeholders as the industry has expanded.

A member of the PGA of America since 1998 and based in Hong Kong since 2001, Mr. Roessel was formerly Vice- President, Golf, at Lagardère Sports and Entertainment where he was responsible for managing the company’s relationship with the China Golf Association / Ministry of Sport and develop of the domestic professional tour.

Mr. Roessel has extensive connections across the world of golf and sports and has overseen i3’s expansion into event management, media, sponsorship sales and consultancy, athlete representation, recruitment and coaching.

i3 recently concluded a long-term partnership with the PGA Tour to develop and manage all aspect of the PGA Tour China Series and has brought the likes of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Derek Jeter to Asia.

i3 Sports took minority shareholder position in Five-Star Sports in 2013 and works with the Five-Star team across many platforms.

Mr. Roessel holds an MBA from the Northwestern University - Kellogg School of Management and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, as well as a BA from Mississippi State University.



Mr. Kruse is the President and Chief Sales Officer for New Vision Display (NVD), and is an active investor having founded or been involved in the start-up of several entities during his 10+ years living in China. He currently is based out of Chicago, USA and spends 3-4 months per year in China.

Mr. Kruse is also the founder of China Core International (CCI), a Hong Kong based manufacturing outsourcing partner and consulting company that specializes in hard to solve custom manufacturing solutions, having worked on projects as various as micro motors to hyperbaric chambers.

Mr. Kruse’s experience is rooted in both China and USA-based manufacturing and production management. Mr. Kruse has acted as General Manager for multiple large China-based production facilities such as Emerson, Solar Power Inc, Backer Heating and Norells Automotive. Mr. Kruse specializes in managing dynamic production teams utilizing modern manufacturing management tools such as 5S, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, etc. Mr. Kruse’s expertise spans the Industrial, Solar, Wind Energy, Electrical Heating and Automotive Industries.

David Kruse was a consultant to Joel Haines prior to and at the founding of Five-Star Sports. He is a minority shareholder and plays an ongoing active advisory role in Five-Star Sports’ expansion planning.

Mr. Kruse holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from University of Illinois at Chicago, and is fluent in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese.
